Ability Health and Fitness

Ability Health and Fitness is a community health and lifestyle programme for people who want to manage or improve their fitness. A free walking programme is starting early next month meeting outside Rutherglen Library every Monday from 12.30pm and Thursday from 7pm where you take a 60 minute brisk walk and meet others.

Regular Brisk walking can help you to 
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve your balance and co-ordination

Spaces are limited so pre-booking is essential.


Burnside Community Council

Burnside Community Council meet regularly in the Rutherglen Tennis Club on Viewpark Drive in Burnside to discuss issues of important to the people of Burnside. Their main talking areas include the closure of banks in Burnside, speeding issues on the new Cathkin Relief Road and many more.

Burnside in Bloom

Burnside in Bloom are a small group of local volunteers who aim to brighten up Burnside with various projects such as bulb planting. The group also try to encourage more wildlife, deal with pollution and encourage friendliness and helpfulness.

They are looking for volunteers to help with the upkeep of Burnside Station. So if you can spare at least two hours a fortnight and are interested contact them via their Facebook page or their website.


Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council

Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council are responsible for promoting sports in the local area. Each year they have an award ceremony celebrating sporting achievements and to say thanks to those who volunteer at the local sports clubs. 

They also hold a number of events through the year aimed to celebrating and encouraging young people to participate in various sports.

Cambuslang Community Council

Cambuslang Community Council meet every third Tuesday of the month, except for breaks in the summer and winter. They campaign, amongst other things, to reverse the decline in passing trade to Cambuslang Main Street and encourage more shoppers and businesses to vist.

The area covered by Cambuslang Community Council includes central Cambuslang, Kirkhill, Vicarland, Holmhills, Whitlawburn, Silverbank and Eastfield.

Cambuslang in Bloom

Cambuslang in Bloom are a group run by Cambuslang Community Council, with a mission to keep Cambuslang looking "blooming" marvellous.

To continue to do that they need your help to help spend around an hour or two per week to tend to plants around the town. They usually meet every Wednesday and Saturday.

Castlemilk Park Project

Castlemilk Park Project hold a number of events in the parklands and woodlands across Castlemilk. Events include photography strolls, story telling sessions, gardening tips and much more. Clyde Gateway

Clyde Gateway was established in 2008 to regenerate the south east of Glasgow, including Rutherglen, building on the legacy of the successful and memorable 2014 Commonwealth Games. They aim to change the areas socially, economically and physically over the 20 year period running to 2028.


Fernbrae Meadows

Fernbrae Meadows are a newly constituted group who help manage the Urban Greenspace being built on the site of the former Blairbeth Golf Club. The redevelopment of the former Blairbeth Golf Course by South Lanarkshire Council in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage will transform this site into a high quality greenspace for the benefit of the surrounding communities. It will provide an accessible space for healthy activity, protect and preserve greenspace and create a haven for wildlife.
