Ability Health and Fitness

Ability Health and Fitness is a community health and lifestyle programme for people who want to manage or improve their fitness. A free walking programme is starting early next month meeting outside Rutherglen Library every Monday from 12.30pm and Thursday from 7pm where you take a 60 minute brisk walk and meet others.

Regular Brisk walking can help you to 
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve your balance and co-ordination

Spaces are limited so pre-booking is essential.


Burnhill Action Group

Burnhill Action Group, supported by Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust, aims to:
  • Act as a positive voice for the Burnhill neighbourhood by working together to improve the area, for the benefit of everyone who resides there.
  • Promote community well-being, community spirit and cohesion.
  • Foster and encourage community pride, by making the area a better and safer place to live.

Burnside Community Council

Burnside Community Council meet regularly in the Rutherglen Tennis Club on Viewpark Drive in Burnside to discuss issues of important to the people of Burnside. Their main talking areas include the closure of banks in Burnside, speeding issues on the new Cathkin Relief Road and many more.

Burnside in Bloom

Burnside in Bloom are a small group of local volunteers who aim to brighten up Burnside with various projects such as bulb planting. The group also try to encourage more wildlife, deal with pollution and encourage friendliness and helpfulness.

They are looking for volunteers to help with the upkeep of Burnside Station. So if you can spare at least two hours a fortnight and are interested contact them via their Facebook page or their website.


Cambuslang and Rutherglen on Tape

Cambuslang and Rutherglen on Tape (CARROT) brings all the latest news and events happening in the area to people who may have difficulty with their eyesight or reading and is completely free of charge. If you, or know anyone who, can benefit from this service you can call Barbera on 0141 569 8321. If she is not in the office simply leave a message and she will get back to you.


Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council

Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council are responsible for promoting sports in the local area. Each year they have an award ceremony celebrating sporting achievements and to say thanks to those who volunteer at the local sports clubs.

Cambuslang Community Council

Cambuslang Community Council meet every third Tuesday of the month, except for breaks in the summer and winter. They campaign, amongst other things, to reverse the decline in passing trade to Cambuslang Main Street and encourage more shoppers and businesses to vist.

The area covered by Cambuslang Community Council includes central Cambuslang, Kirkhill, Vicarland, Holmhills, Whitlawburn, Silverbank and Eastfield.

Cambuslang in Bloom

Cambuslang in Bloom are a group run by Cambuslang Community Council, with a mission to keep Cambuslang looking "blooming" marvellous.

To continue to do that they need your help to help spend around an hour or two per week to tend to plants around the town. They usually meet every Wednesday and Saturday.

CamGlen Bike Town

CamGlen Bike Town offers residents of Cambuslang and Rutherglen the opportunity to stay active, be social and have fun. Their aim is to get everybody in the area cycling whilst reducing the local carbon footprint. Bike Town offers a number of activites including guided rides and bike maintenance workshops, primarily based around their shop at Unit 5 Thomson Court, Bankhead Industrial Area, Rutherglen G73 2RR. Castlemilk Park Project

Castlemilk Park Project hold a number of events in the parklands and woodlands across Castlemilk. Events include photography strolls, story telling sessions, gardening tips and much more. Clyde Gateway

Clyde Gateway was established in 2008 to regenerate the south east of Glasgow, including Rutherglen, building on the legacy of the successful and memorable 2014 Commonwealth Games. They aim to change the areas socially, economically and physically over the 20 year period running to 2028.


EAT Up

Eat Up is a new initiative run by St Bride's RC Church, where visitors can get a three course lunch free of charge, get to meet new people and make new friends. Doors open at noon every Wednesday and the club runs until 2pm. The church is located on Greenlees Road and there's no need to pre-book or phone ahead - just turn up on the day! Fernbrae Meadows

Fernbrae Meadows are a newly constituted group who help manage the Urban Greenspace being built on the site of the former Blairbeth Golf Club. The redevelopment of the former Blairbeth Golf Course by South Lanarkshire Council in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage will transform this site into a high quality greenspace for the benefit of the surrounding communities. It will provide an accessible space for healthy activity, protect and preserve greenspace and create a haven for wildlife. Friends of Cambuslang Park

Friends of Cambuslang Park is a group of local residents whose aim is to promote Cambuslang Park as an outdoor space for locals and visitors to enjoy. They run many events such as the popular Bark In The Park event. They are always looking for new volunteers to join them and running a consultation to get new ideas for the park.

Friends of Holmhills Wood Community Park

Friends of Holmhills Wood Community Park are made up by a group of local residents who work to keep the woodland surrounding Greenlees Road and Langlea Drive looking its best. They hold regular informal meetings to come up with ideas for landscaping and events to hold in the park. They always welcome new members to join them.

Greening CamGlen is a network of like-minded local organisations and groups working in Rutherglen and Cambuslang to promote environmentally positive activities and actions within the local area to create the best environment and community for today and tomorrow. Halfway Community Council

Halfway Community Council represent the views of the communities of Flemington, Cairns, Overton, Lightburn, Westburn, Newton, Drumsagard, Hallside and Greenlees.

They meet every third Wednesday of the month in Cairns Primary School and are open to the public to hear the issues being discussed.

Issues currently being campainged include protest against an incinerator proposed for Blantyre and local woodland regeneration.

Home Energy Scotland

Home Energy Scotland are an arms-length Scottish Government funded scheme who provide free and impartial advice on saving on your fuel bills, how to drive more efficiently and on things such as home insulation. The group are aiming to promote awareness of fuel poverty and what steps you can take ahead of the winter to stop yourself being caught in the poverty trap.

Kilbryde Hospice

Kilbryde Hospice are based at the grounds of Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, providing support to people with life limiting illnesses and to their carers with a number of services including day services, home visits & inpatient services. Lanarkshire Credit Union Limited is a local financial co-operative owned and controlled by its members to provide straightforward savings and loans for anyone who lives or works in Lanarkshire.

Lanarkshire Epilepsy Support Group

Did you know approximently 4,528 people in Lanarkshire have epilepsy? Lanarkshire Epilepsy Support Group aim to raise awareness and provide information and support, and are actively looking for volunteers to get involved.

LANDED

LANDED is a young person's organisation that covers both North and South Lanarkshire. The aim of the organisation is to encourage young people to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. We provide awareness raising workshops to young people to increase their knowledge and understanding about drugs, alcohol, sexual health, tobacco, cannabis and legal highs.

They use a peer education approach to do this, and support young people who volunteer with their service to become peer educators.

LEAP was established in the Lightburn area of Cambuslang in 1992 and has gradually expanded across Cambuslang and Rutherglen offering a range of services that best meet the needs of older people in the community.

LGBT Health and Wellbeing

LGBT Health and Wellbeing was set up in 2003 to promote to promote the health, wellbeing and equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Scotland. It provides support, services and information to improve health and wellbeing, reduce social isolation and stimulate community development and volunteering.

The organisation’s key objectives are:

  • To provide a programme of activities which tackle the life circumstances that contribute to ill-health of LGBT people
  • To reduce levels of isolation and social exclusion experienced by LGBT people
  • To strengthen the capacity of the LGBT community to promote the health of individuals
  • To support individuals to adopt and sustain healthy lifestyles
  • To ensure that LGBT people have equity of access to mainstream health services and information which are responsive to their needs.

MacMillan Cancer support

Macmillan Cancer Support provide a wide range of services for people affected by cancer in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire. All of our services are volunteers led, and we are urgently recruiting for new volunteers in these areas.

We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities to suit most lifestyles – from providing practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer, helping out at our gardening and allotment projects or assisting us with our administration and co-ordination of our services. You don’t need any qualifications or experience, just excellent communication skills, patience, empathy and the ability to provide a listening ear.  

If you feel you can offer a couple of hours a week to support people in your local community, we can offer you full training and ongoing development, travel expenses and the chance to be involved in a unique volunteering opportunity.

Money Matters Advice Service - Cambuslang and Rutherglen

South Lanarkshire Council's Money Matters Advice Service provides welfare rights and money advice services:

  • The welfare rights service provides information and advice on all social security related benefits, including assistance to complete claim forms. It offers benefit checks to ensure people are receiving their full entitlement and provides a support and representation service to people who have been refused benefits or wish to appeal their claim.
  • The money advice service provides information, advice and representation to people who are experiencing difficulty in dealing with debts including mortgage/rent/council tax arrears, payment of household bills and credit or catalogue debts.

Music Broth

Music Broth is a social enterprise set up by local man Felix Slavin, whose aim is to create a musical instrument and equipment library. After teaming up with Zero Waste Scotland to run a pop up shop for a week during Pass It On Week the aim is to find permanent premises and are accepting donations of any pre-loved musical equipment.

The home of our studios No.18 Venue, ran by Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust. The building has recently reopened after a major refurbishment with support from Clyde Gateway and Asda Foundation. Project 31

Project 31 run a wide variety of events across Rutherglen and Cambuslang for children and families free of charge. Across local parks and many venues they encourage youngsters to connect with nature, let their artistics sides out and have a lot of fun while learning about the world around them.

Rail 74 CRP

Rail 74 Community Rail Partnership is a partnership aimed at bringing communities and individuals together along the railway line running between Hamilton and Rutherglen. They aim to work with stakeholders, community groups and organisations to achieve improvements to the towns of Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Blantyre and Hamilton. Rotary Club of Rutherglen

Rotary is a service organisation of business and professional leaders united worldwide who help those in need, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and work towards world understanding and peace.

The Rotary Club of Rutherglen holds meetings each week at 5.45pm for 6.00pm, at the Kings Park Hotel in Rutherglen. Their meetings begin with a 2 course meal and an opportunity to enjoy conversation and fellowship. After the meal and after some brief business,  they invite their guest speaker to address the members and guests. (With the exception of the first meeting in each month at which business is discussed)

Rutherglen Community Carers

The group is for service users that have been refered to Rutherglen Community Carers, referals have had a recent diagnosis of dementia. The group has access to a community bus and visit a variety of venues across Glasgow every Wednesday. 

The project was established in 1993 and aims to provide care, understanding and support to those who care for relatives or friends in the community who have dementia or mental ill health.

The services available are home based respite, carers support, early diagnosed dementia group, advice and information and a library service.

Rutherglen Community Council hold regular meetings open to the public and press, discussing a wide range of issues affecting people in the town, and work with South Lanarkshire Council to make improvements.

The Scottish Ethnic Minority Deaf Club are a group who, as the name suggest, run for people of ethnic minorites who have a hearing impaiment, ran by people who are deaf themselves. They have fortnightly meetings on a Saturday in their base in Pollokshields and organise outings all over Scotland.

Springhall and Whitlawburn Youth Development Trust

SWYDT are a group of young people who want to make sure young people in the area have their voices heard and make their ideas a reality. They run two groups for 12-18 year olds.

Girls group meets on Tuesdays 6-7.30pm with the boys meeting at 7.30pm-9pm at Whitlawburn Community Resource Centre.


Stonelaw High Fairtraders

Stonelaw High Schools Fairtrade Group sends all its profits to Ikusasalethu High School - situated in a rural area in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa - so aid or funds can be raised to make a uniform and to help them get into senior education.

Anyone can attend their events which are hosted every Tuesday lunchtime at Stonelaw High School, 140 Calderwood Rd, Rutherglen, Glasgow G73 3BP

The Samaritans

Samaritans provides emotional support for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgment or pressure. By phone, text and in person in branches across the UK, they are there 24 hours a day.

Their vision is that fewer people die by suicide. They work towards this by:

  • making sure there’s someone there for anyone who needs someone;
  • giving people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others;
  • campaigning to make suicide prevention a national and local priority.

Treble Cleffs Choir Group

The Treble Cleffs Choir Group meet every Wednesday evenings and sing songs you all know and love! Aimed at 9-18 year olds, they meet in the Old Parish Church in Rutherglen on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm. The cost is £3 per session.

Voluntary Action, South Lanarkshire

VASLan maintain a database of volunteering opportunities in South Lanarkshire, and offer appointments to individuals who are interested in becoming volunteers and want to see what’s out there suited to their interests.

VASLan also co-ordinate the Saltire Awards in South Lanarkshire, which recognise the commitment and achievements of young volunteers, and we organise and administer the Volunteering Awards which pick out exceptional examples of voluntary work each year.
